Frequently asked questions
TraderDesk questions, answered
This page answers the questions we get most often about TraderDesk: supported brokers, paper trading, order types, risk controls, pricing, API key storage and Windows. Each answer is written to be read on its own, with links to the page that goes deeper.
Product basics
What is TraderDesk?
TraderDesk is a Windows desktop trading workstation for placing orders through your own broker accounts. It combines multi-account order entry, an options chain, a multi-leg builder with payoff and Greeks, positions, an order book, logs and configurable risk limits. It is not a broker, investment adviser or signal service.
Is TraderDesk a broker?
No. TraderDesk is software. Your accounts remain with your brokers, your funds stay with your brokers, and you are responsible for your orders and broker relationships. TraderDesk does not hold customer funds.
Which Windows versions are supported?
Windows 10 and Windows 11. The current build is Windows-only; there is no macOS or Linux version. A desktop or laptop with a stable internet connection is recommended.
Does TraderDesk work outside the US?
The product is focused on US markets and US broker accounts. Some brokers, segments and instruments are restricted by region or by your account. Check the broker page and your broker’s availability before relying on a connection.
Is there a demo mode?
Yes. Built-in demo accounts are available without an API key. Some brokers also provide paper or sandbox credentials, such as Alpaca paper keys and the Tradier sandbox.
Does TraderDesk give investment advice?
No. It does not recommend trades, provide signals, manage money or offer tax or legal advice. The options analysis, backtests and Greeks are tools for your own research. You decide what to trade.
Can TraderDesk trade automatically?
It can run a strategy rule that you configure, including live execution where the strategy is enabled. That is automation of your instructions, not advice. You choose the rule, accounts, size and risk limits, and you can stop it at any time.
Brokers
Which brokers does TraderDesk support?
Alpaca, Tradier, Interactive Brokers, Tastytrade, TradeStation, Charles Schwab, OANDA, MetaTrader 5 and MetaTrader 4, plus built-in demo accounts. Segments differ by broker and by your account permissions.
Which brokers support options?
Alpaca, Tradier, Interactive Brokers, Tastytrade, TradeStation and Charles Schwab show options in the current build. Your account still needs options approval and the relevant market-data permissions.
Which brokers support futures?
Interactive Brokers and TradeStation show futures segments. Futures trading requires the relevant broker permissions and agreements. Confirm the exchanges and symbols your account can access.
Do I need API keys?
For a live broker account, yes: you add the key, token or gateway login the broker page describes. For demo accounts, no. For paper or sandbox accounts, use the credentials your broker provides.
Can I connect more than one account at the same broker?
Yes. Add each account as a separate connection and tick the ones you want on the order ticket. Each account gets its own result after you send.
Are MT4 and MT5 available to US traders?
MT4/MT5 are generally not offered to US retail forex clients. Availability depends on your broker and region. TraderDesk does not provide brokerage services and does not claim US retail availability for MT4/MT5.
What if one account rejects the order?
The other accounts can still receive the order. TraderDesk reports a result for each account separately, so a rejection on one account does not hide the result on another. Review the per-account results and the log.
Can I use a paper or sandbox account?
Yes, where your broker provides one. Alpaca paper keys and the Tradier sandbox are the clearest examples. Other brokers vary; check the broker page or your broker’s documentation.
Orders, risk and data
How do I place an order on multiple accounts?
Connect the accounts, open the Order tab, choose the segment and instrument, set the order type, quantity and time in force, tick the accounts you want, and send. Read the result for each account afterwards.
What order types are supported?
Market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders with time in force. The ticket shows the quote and notional value before you send.
What risk controls are included?
Maximum value per order, maximum shares or contracts per order, maximum orders per minute, daily loss limit, optional block on live orders when the market is closed, and a kill switch in the top bar. Limits are checked on your PC before routing.
Do risk controls guarantee I cannot lose money?
No. They reduce some risks when configured correctly, but they depend on your settings, your broker’s behaviour and market conditions. Losses can still exceed your expectations, especially with options, futures and leveraged products.
Is market data real-time?
It depends on your broker and data subscriptions. TraderDesk can fall back to another source when the broker feed is unavailable. Data may be delayed or unavailable and is for reference only.
Does TraderDesk guarantee execution speed?
No. Orders go to the broker APIs you connect. Speed and fills depend on your broker, your connection and market conditions. No latency or fill quality is promised.
Do backtests predict future results?
No. A backtest is a simulation based on historical data and assumptions. It can be affected by missing data, survivorship bias, fees, slippage and overfitting. Past performance and backtests do not guarantee future results.
Pricing and early access
Is TraderDesk free?
It is free during early access. The first 25 approved beta users get a 12-month licence in exchange for honest feedback. Pricing after the early-access programme has not been announced.
What does the beta require?
Use the app and give honest feedback on what works, what is confusing and what is missing. A testimonial is welcome but never required. The licence runs for 12 months from activation.
How do I join the beta?
Use the form on the early-access page. Tell us what you trade, which brokers you use and how many accounts you manage. We review requests and email the next steps.
Do you share beta details?
No. We use them to contact you about TraderDesk. Read the privacy policy for the full explanation of the form and support messages.
Security, privacy and downloads
Where are API keys stored?
Broker API keys are stored locally on your PC and encrypted at rest. Preemption Softwares does not receive your broker credentials.
What data leaves my device?
TraderDesk sends order and market-data requests to the brokers and data providers you connect. Website analytics runs only if you accept the analytics consent. Beta form details are sent to our form provider when you submit the early-access form.
Do you have access to my brokerage account?
No. Your accounts remain with your brokers. The app uses the credentials you store locally to send the orders you configure. Preemption Softwares does not hold your funds or trade on your behalf.
Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?
TraderDesk is new and not yet code-signed, so Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. Verify the SHA-256 checksum on the download page before running the installer. Do not disable antivirus.
How do I verify the installer?
Open PowerShell in the download folder and run Get-FileHash .\TraderDesk-US-1.1.3-Setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256. Compare the output with the SHA-256 published on the download page.
Is there a macOS or Linux version?
No. The current build is Windows 10 or Windows 11 only. Do not rely on a macOS or Linux version until one is published on this site.
How do I update TraderDesk?
Use the update panel inside the app. It checks for a newer build and links to the current installer. Review the release version before updating and keep a note of any local settings you rely on.
